I believe I’ve already shared this one before but sharing this once again to benefit anyone who might have missed it. YOU MAY WANT TO PRINT, FILE IT AWAY AND PULL IT OUT for future reference! I must admit, I found several of these many handy technology tips that I didn’t know before!

Tech Tips for the Basic Computer User

David Pogue, NYT, October 2, 2008, 12:22 pm Last week, I wrote an entry on my blog that began like this:

“One of these days, I’m going to write a book called, ‘The Basics.’ It’s
going to be a compendium of the essential tech bits that you just assume
everyone knows-but you’re wrong.

“(I’ll never forget watching a book editor at a publishing house
painstakingly drag across a word in a word processor to select it. After
10 minutes of this, I couldn’t stand it. ‘Why don’t you just double-click
the word?’ She had no clue you could do that!)”

Many readers chimed in with other “basics” that they assumed every
computer user knew-but soon discovered that what’s common knowledge isn’t
the same as universal knowledge.

I’m sure the basics could fill a book, but here are a few to get you
started. All of these are things that certain friends, family or
coworkers, over the years, did *not* know. Clip, save and pass along
to…well, you know who they are.

* You can double-click a word to highlight it in any document, e-mail or
Web page.

* When you get an e-mail message from eBay or your bank, claiming that you
have an account problem or a question from a buyer, it’s probably a
“phishing scam” intended to trick you into typing your password. Don’t
click the link in the message. If in doubt, go into your browser and type
“www.ebay.com” (or whatever) manually.

* Nobody, but nobody, is going to give you half of $80 million to help
them liberate the funds of a deceased millionaire…from Nigeria or anywhere
else.

* You can hide all windows, revealing only what’s on the computer desktop,
with one keystroke: hit the Windows key and “D” simultaneously in Windows,
or press F11 on Macs (on recent Mac laptops, Command+F3; Command is the
key with the cloverleaf logo). That’s great when you want examine or
delete something you’ve just downloaded to the desktop, for example. Press
the keystroke again to return to what you were doing.

* You can enlarge the text on any Web page. In Windows, press Ctrl and the
plus or minus keys (for bigger or smaller fonts); on the Mac, it’s the
Command key and plus or minus.

* You can also enlarge the entire Web page or document by pressing the
Control key as you turn the wheel on top of your mouse. On the Mac, this
enlarges the entire screen image.

* The number of megapixels does not determine a camera’s picture quality;
that’s a marketing myth. The sensor size is far more important. (Use
Google to find it. For example, search for “sensor size Nikon D90.”)

* On most cellphones, press the Send key to open up a list of recent
calls. Instead of manually dialing, you can return a call by highlighting
one of these calls and pressing Send again.

* When someone sends you some shocking e-mail and suggests that you pass it on, don’t. At least not until you’ve first confirmed its truth at
snopes.com, the Internet’s authority on e-mailed myths. This includes get-rich schemes, Microsoft/AOL cash giveaways, and-especially
lately-nutty scare-tactic messages about our Presidential candidates.

* You can tap the Space bar to scroll down on a Web page one screenful.
Add the Shift key to scroll back up.

* When you’re filling in the boxes on a Web page (like City, State, Zip),
you can press the Tab key to jump from box to box, rather than clicking.
Add the Shift key to jump through the boxes backwards.

* You can adjust the size and position of any window on your computer.
Drag the top strip to move it; drag the lower-right corner (Mac) or any
edge (Windows) to resize it.

* Forcing the camera’s flash to go off prevents silhouetted, too-dark
faces when you’re outdoors.

* When you’re searching for something on the Web using, say, Google, put
quotes around phrases that must be searched together. For example, if you
put quotes around “electric curtains,” Google won’t waste your time
finding one set of Web pages containing the word “electric” and another
set containing the word “curtains.”

* You can use Google to do math for you. Just type the equation, like
23*7+15/3=, and hit Enter.

* Oh, yeah: on the computer, * means “times” and / means “divided by.”

* If you can’t find some obvious command, like Delete in a photo program,
try clicking using the right-side mouse button. (On the Mac, you can
Control-click instead.)

* Google is also a units-of-measuremen t and currency converter. Type
“teaspoons in 1.3 gallons,” for example, or “euros in 17 dollars.” Click
Search to see the answer.

* You can open the Start menu by tapping the key with the Windows logo on it.

* You can switch from one open program to the next by pressing Alt+Tab
(Windows) or Command-Tab (Mac).

* You generally can’t send someone more than a couple of full-size digital
photos as an e-mail attachment; those files are too big, and they’ll
bounce back to you. (Instead, use iPhoto or Picasa-photo- organizing
programs that can automatically scale down photos in the process of
e-mailing them.)

* Whatever technology you buy today will be obsolete soon, but you can
avoid heartache by learning the cycles. New iPods come out every
September. New digital cameras come out in February and October.

* Just putting something into the Trash or the Recycle Bin doesn’t
actually delete it. You then have to *empty* the Trash or Recycle Bin.
(Once a year, I hear about somebody whose hard drive is full, despite
having practically no files. It’s because over the years, they’ve put 79
gigabytes’ worth of stuff in the Recycle Bin and never emptied it.)

* You don’t have to type “http://www” into your Web browser. Just type the
remainder: “nytimes.com” or “dilbert.com,” for example. (In the Safari
browser, you can even leave off the “.com” part.)

* On the iPhone, hit the Space bar twice at the end of a sentence. You get
a period, a space, and a capitalized letter at the beginning of the next
word.

* Come up with an automated backup system for your computer. There’s no
misery quite like the sick feeling of having lost chunks of your life
because you didn’t have a safety copy.

An astrologer friend of my wife picked the date (July 10, 1984) after analyzing our full name and the dates of our birth. Thanks Manolo, after 25 years I realized your right. hahaha!

Evelyn, my wife doesn’t know how to cook at that time so I did all the cooking. One time while I was taking a bath I heard a loud explosion. I hurriedly went out to check what happened. She boiled a pot of water that dried up and resulted to an explosion sending the pot projecting skyward. It was a good thing nobody was hurt. Just one of many funny incidents we encountered that made our union exciting. We complement each other. I’m on the talkative side and she was the silent type at the start but now it’s the other way around.

The challenging part of our married life was the last quarter of the year 1988 while my wife was pregnant with Melvin. I was assigned as a Store Supervisor in Baclaran. Under a womanizing manager named Charlie.

Charlie’s wife was a very feisty lady that all the staff knew when they had a fight the night before because he would be wearing a long sleeve shirt to cover the fingernail scratches he received all over his body.
He would always ask me to do things for him. To the point of waiting for him in a bar with a woman he was wooing while he was trying to escape from his wife’s tight guarding ( ala Jaworski). He would leave home only clad in undershirt to avoid suspicion. He already prepares a formal wear waiting for pick up at our branch guardhouse. Got the picture?

I almost always arrived home late at night reeking alcohol that led her to suspect me of having an affair with another woman. Our fights became so frequent that made me think of doing it to justify her suspicion. She became the woman I never knew she would become.

We cant stop
The feelings to strong
Weve got the will to hang on
Cant stop
We struggle and fight to survive
Keepin the love alive

Christmas Party, December 31, 1988

I was in high spirit that morning because I have made a promise with my wife that I would go home early for us to be able to attend the midnight mass before eating our Media Noche. I informed my boss of my promise to my wife and to my two children, he gladly gave his consent.

But as Fate would have it, while in the middle of our Christmas Party, my boss was caught by his wife sitting on a lap of a saleslady in a compromising situation inside the office. We all knew what would happen later in their home. My boss would be fighting a losing battle but before he rushed home he assured me to wait for him before going home as I promised my wife. I had no option but to wait for him because our party was being held inside our store. I have lost count how many bottles of beer I was able to consume while waiting for the arrival of my boss.

I felt helpless and quite frustrated I could not contact my wife to explain my side and I knew she wouldn’t believe me. I am a man who always keep my promises but now I felt different under Charlie. So many promises I made were broken because of covering for him.

Was I dreaming?

Two big slaps on the face awaken me that brought me back to my senses. Seeing the face of my wife made me thinking I was home. I was trying to recall how I managed to come home when she immediately ran away. Seeing all the shoes around me made me realized I have slept in our store and my wife came for a visit and delivered those extra hot slaps on my face.
After a few minutes more Charlie arrived telling me how sorry he was and that I could go home and spend my day off.
I arrived home finding all my stuff inside two suitcases. Our door was closed, she won’t let me in and she wanted a separation. I was totally devastated because she won’t listen to my explanation.
This problem was resolved in a week’s time. This was a classic example of a problem that goes out of hand not on your own making but by circumstances beyond your control. We must not let our emotions overrule our mind in making decision. Give your partner the chance to speak up and have an open mind while listening.
Then February 28, 1989 I was promoted and was assigned to handle our Taytay branch. Another problem happened as I wrote here: When my Faith was tested

In all those family struggles of our life I never asked for helped from my in-laws and so did she. I had worked so hard for the financial needs of my family that you can name all businesses with earning potential, I have joined them.

I even became a manager of Tupperware direct selling business in a record time of 1 1/2 month after joining them. The picture at right shows my promotion to Baby Manager. Year 1999!?It was also in this stage that I believed I earned the respect of my in-laws. They are now encouraging my wife to work so that she could help me in raising our family.
Of course I objected because I promised myself that I would do everything for her. For keeping our love alive. For fighting for our love till death do us part as we said in our marriage vow.

She’s now a good cook who could whip up Chinese, Ilokano and Tagalog dishes. Her specialty was mami that tastes like you’re eating at a Chowking Restaurant.

Yes there were temptations in my line of work but my strong belief in the law of karma always reminded me to stay on the right path. “You reap what you sow”. I don’t want any member of my family suffering because of my past sin.

We just enjoy each others company and always do the thing we love to do such as cooking. Being open with each other helps a lot. We never fight over money. We try to solve every problem that comes our way in a more diplomatic way.

There were usual fights like ordinary couple but she never experience receiving physical harm from me. But I remember one time, In my anger I punched our kitchen door made of double plywood. It was so hard that it broke and so did my arm. I never repeated it again. Sakit ata nun!.?

We are now planning to build another room in the ground floor of our home in preparation for the time that we could not climb to our second floor room.?
Old age is fast approaching!

I am not really the type of person who takes time in counting the years of our wedding anniversary. But my daughter Mae makes our (25th) Silver Wedding Anniversary special. Why? I’ll tell you later.

I’ll tell you first our love story and how we ended up from worst enemy to become lovers and friends.

9 years of being steady plus 25 years of married life and still going strong was perhaps a record of sort here in our country. Maybe we have grown tired of hearing other married people fight and getting separated that’s why our married life works, yes!

No! I think we become closer because we don’t discuss things that bother us but we talked them over. We spent time a few minutes before going to sleep discussing things that happened in a day.

We knew each other so well that we gave time and space when the need arise without each one asking for it. I encouraged her to go out and join her friends when she got invitations. To spend time for herself to break the monotony of staying at home mom. She does the same to me.

The Story :

She was our neighbor who was a quite type and seldom goes out of their home. My friend then was her two older sisters. I am two years older than her.

I use to call her “Labo” because she was wearing a thick eyeglasses then and she calls me “Palito” because I was thin and quite a joker during those days. Our constant quarrel and bickering makes our neighbors and friends day complete.

Our neighbors used to tease us every time our path crosses because they knew that we hated each other. I really don’t know why and how the hatred started.

When the “Kabataang Barangay” was first established by then President F. Marcos I was duly elected as the first Chairman and she was elected as one of my councilor. I was not aware that she campaign for me.

Then we became member of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD). Here I have to learn how to play the guitar because my voice was not made for singing. She was assigned to fetch the kids for Catechism classes and in serving refreshment food.We managed to be civil with each other here because we are always near a Priest.

She was studying in Mapua during her High school days and I was studying at Manila High School. Then one day, on my way to school riding a jeep I noticed that the girl seated next to me wearing a Mapua uniform was my mortal enemy.

That moment I realized that this mortal enemy of mine was a lovely lady and I started to shift my gear and be a friendly gentleman. I was on my third year of High School then (maagang lumandi! hahaha!).

I was already in my fourth year of high school and she was on her second year when she realized that she loves me too!

Our theme song was a song by Michael Jackson “One day in your life”. The reason why “Jacko” would always be part of my life.

Please sing with me!

Then her parents find out our secret love, the story now becomes “You and Me Against the world“.

So on our first 5 years of being sweetheart we broke up three times. It was always my fault for falling in love with other girls and had the mistake of being caught. I was always a happy go lucky guy that her parents never saw anything good in my person.

The third time we broke up had me crying during the night but have to show no emotion in front of my friends. Ican’t eat and sleep that I realized that those lyric of the song by “Hotdog” titled “Pers Lab” was so true.

Di na makatulog
Di pa makakain
Taghiyawat sa ilong
Pati na sa pisngi
Sa kaiisip sa’yo
Taghiyawat dumadami

(Why was it when we were young we always associate our emotion with a song)

Maybe those things and a lot of other petty quarrel made us knew each other well like a palm of our hand.

So to cut the story short, we got married at the chapel of Sta Cruz church with only a ring bearer in tow and a pair of Godparent. This chapel was being use by Parish Priest in their daily personal prayer.

In attendance was my mother, her parents (despite their objection) some close friends and relatives. The Choir where I belong sang in that very solemn occasion.

The reception was held at Modern Restaurant just across Sta. Cruz Church.

Would you believe that we started our family with only P10, 000.00 in savings? Part of the money we used in our wedding expenses including payment for the reception . My best friend Roland’s car was used as the official wedding car which we both decorated with flowers bought at Dangwa. See, sariling sikap talaga!

As a normal couple we encounter many problems especially during the first ten years of our marriage. Different problem needs different solution. I need to work real hard to sustain the financial side of my growing family.

We never got to be rich but we are happy and contented with what we have. We have 5 grown up kids and three of them now College graduate.

2 more are both in High School education so the pressure of having a family somewhat diminished.

As I see it now, after 25 years of blissful marriage life, we were still the same like when we were young.

Only the number of our age change but feelings is still the same. Our constant communication over the phone or through text is a practice we never planned/wanted but become a habit.

This coming July 10, 2009 we would be celebrating our 25th Silver Wedding Anniversary. My daughter Mae gifted us a trip not to Jerusalem, but to Singapore.

A four nights 3 days visit to the Lion City -Singapore that starts from July 10 - 14, 2009 would make this wedding anniversary special.

So friends I appreciate all your greetings, prayers and support but this time I prefer to accept cash. Hahaha!

Please don’t forget to sing “One Day in Your Life” for me and my wife!

Some interesting Filipino business names.

Filipinos are creative in different ways. Others also have their other forms of being “creative.” They try to derive a new one from an existing idea. Just like coming up a name for their business. Few of them would extract their concept and then they start to think from there.

I came across an article from a local newspaper that somehow made me laugh. I thought of sharing it, there might be Filipinos who could relate to what I’m talking about. They might have seen some of them when they visit our place. Or maybe even if your not a Filipino, this might make you smile for a few minutes. There are statements that are in Filipino language so, I apologize for those who don’t understand but there are some that are in English so you still can figure out some of them. Happy reading!

scandals that started by the Katrina Halili video scandal. I have enumerated them in my earlier post (Here). The latest would be Hayden Kho and Dra. Vicky Belo Video scandal is now out!

Yesterday afternoon, one sidewalk vendor who placed a bet in our lotto outlet
informed us of a new video scandal of Hayden Kho and Maricar Reyes. He named them as Hayden Kho and Maricar Reyes video Part 4 (Lumang Bahay) and Part 5 ( Sleeping). Poor Maricar Reyes a victim of Hayden Kho that remains to suffer quietly.

We were jokingly telling the man that maybe he had already seen the complete collection of Hayden Kho which according to news report reaches to at least 40 video files.

Then suddenly one customer from behind us just butted in that a DVD copy of those files can be bought now at the Mecca of pirated DVD, Quiapo area. Plus she volunteered that it also contain the video scandal of Dra. Vicky Belo doing a “Karaoke” scene on Hayden Kho.
Now what would they call that video? Hayden Kho and Dra. Vicky Belo-“Karaoke”? Singing without a microphone!
One positive news about this development is that the good Doctora would be happy now for proving those detractors that her video would not be selling at P5.00 but for P50.00. Way below from the earlier Katrina video with Hayden Kho that sells at P150.00 during the earlier days of the scandal.
Dra. Vicky Belo felt secured that her video scandal with Hayden Kho was already deleted. It was an act of two consensual adult and would only be viewed for personal use and would be deleted later on as she stated in her TV interviews. Now what happened?
“You must be kidding?”, as the favorite expression of one FM radio station jockey use to say in his program. Dra. Vicky Belo must be kidding!
“Walang lihim na nananatiling lihim” (No secret would forever be kept) is an old adage that was proven again to be true.
Fatherlyours is again reminding everyone that we should always think 10 times before doing a thing that could ruin our reputation and dignity as a person.
While at those topic, I remember in a GMA TV show that discusses about one complain of a lady about her own sex video scandal.
It turned out that both of them ( with her former boyfriend) video tape the whole incident because they took turn in handling the camera. But the BF uploaded the file in the internet (putting her name at the end of the video) and she is now complaining and asking the help of “Imbestigador”.
The entrapment operation was planned and the capture of the culprit was documented.
I tried to Google it and was able to find some facts about the “Trinoma Scandal”.
The lady complaining was working as a Foreign Currency employee and was assigned in a Trinoma Mall.
That’s it for now. The story of Dr. Hayden Kho and his collections of sex videos come to a temporary close for now.

My first provincial assignment that took me away from my family was in San Jose Occidental Mindoro. It will take you 12 hours of (night time) travel if you used Ro-Ro (roll on roll off) from port of Batangas. About 30 – 45 minutes if via plane that travels once a day (morning flight) from Manila Domestic Airport. Mindoro is an Island consisting of Occidental and Oriental. ,
Upon dis-embarking from the plane, I immediately tried to call home. My ever-reliable Nokia 606(remember Billcrusher card) failed to connect. I even stretch the antenna to its full potential, failed to connect again. Then our company representative arrives and whisper to me, “Sir, wala hong cell site dito” (“Sir, there is no cell site here”). I am more amused than angry, “Ah! Ok “is my only reply.
Traveling from airport to branch riding a tricycle had me wondering how I can improve the sales. Almost all the school children going to school that we passed by were wearing slippers. Then, I must teach them how to wear shoes. “Great! Isn’t it?” That’s the spirit.
During my first few nights I could not sleep and felt lonely and tears would slowly fall from my eyes. The first month seems to be too long. I thought of resigning to be with my family. But thru constant prayers and some landline call to my love one somehow eases the pain of being separated with my family.
The work:
One personnel had an undesirable habit that everybody despises about. Nonoy is his name. He would not owe to any mistake that he committed even somebody saw him. He has master the art of reasoning so much so that he can lie while looking at your eyes. Practically everybody hated him.
I almost give up on this one. I believe that I have the talent of making personnel under me to change for the better and became productive. I am good at personnel handling. But this one is different. A simple misunderstanding will become a big conflict. One time he challenges Raul (his co-stocker) for a fight due to a minor incident. A lot of “Notice to Explain” had been given.I started to observe and see his more human side. I tried as much as possible to understand him. To cut the story short, after a few more months, the transformation is so great that everybody though it is just for show. But it is real. The moral of the story is every one of us has a soft spot that needed only to be touched. I reach out to him and he reciprocated positively.
Then one by one I started to know our personnel better. They became (as if) my long lost relatives. They open their homes to me. Their relatives also became my relatives. What you really give to your personnel is what you reap. When I am sick, somebody would bring me food; medicine and from time to time they would check my condition.
My Family:
Then December came and my family became whole again even for that Christmas break. Every morning we would walk a few steps from my rented home to reach the shoreline. Seawater is so clear you can see some small fishes swimming. Sand is so fine. Bringing coffee and bread, we would eat our breakfast while swimming. My wife could cook fresh seafood on a very cheap price.
One time she tried to cook a live crab but made the mistake of removing those strings that bound their claw/chelas. She panicked when the crab, feeling the heat from the stove scampered on different direction and were able to jump out of wok. I, and the children were shouting and jumping and didn’t know what to do. Luckily for us one of our neighbors heard our shouting and expertly showed us how it is being handled.
My family enjoyed so much their short vacation that they eagerly anticipated the coming summer break. Again, we were together during the school break of 1999.
There were many happy moments that reminded me and my family of the place called – “San Jose”. In my heart there is a special place for these memories. “Tocino”, “longganisa”, “sisig”, “kalderetang kambing” and the rice - all seems special there. Maybe this is the place when they coined the word” Special place for special people.”
Thank You:
And when the time had come that I must say goodbye, I didn’t tell them the exact time of my leaving. But they caught me by surprised when on my last day; they presented me with a huge cross-stitch painting. Then one by one, they started talking with tears falling from their eyes. Telling me how I have touched their lives. I must have cried a river too because before I knew it, my handkerchief is so wet with tears I have to use my T-shirt to wipe away some tears. The next day, my eyes were swollen.

I received a lot of text messages this morning and the earliest one came at 5:56 A.M., greeting me a “Happy Father’s Day.

It reminds me about the last two years that my family had been eating out during this occasion.

First time we dined out at Max Restaurant and we went home with free mug. It is still my mug for drinking coffee after dinner. Thanks God it survives the hands of my daughter Ariane from breaking every time she washes the dishes.

The second time we dined out was at Silver Crown Restaurant. One restaurant here that is famous for their Chinese recipe at very affordable prices.

My children had been giving me a lot of side remarks these past few days for a dinner date.

Sorry kids, no budget this time. Maybe somebody will treat us today with your favorite pizza.

I just realized that Father’s Day celebrations around the world were celebrated with different dates. We followed our celebration from other Asian Countries and the USA (3rd Sunday of June) and that it was commercialized in the year 1930 in New York.

The Associated Men’s Wear Retailers formed a National Father’s Day Committee in New York City in the 1930s, which was renamed in 1938 to National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day and incorporated several other trade groups.[6] This council had the goals of legitimizing the holiday in the mind of the people and managing the holiday as a commercial event in a more systematic way, in order to boost the sales during the holiday.[6] This council always had the support of Dodd, who had no problem with the commercialization of the holiday and endorsed several promotions to increase the amount of gifts.[7] In this aspect she can be considered the opposite of Anna Jarvis, who actively opposed all commercialization of Mother’s Day.[7]

The merchants recognized the tendency to parody and satirize the holiday, and used it to their benefit by mocking the holiday on the same advertisements where they promoted the gifts for fathers.[8] People felt compelled to buy gifts even though they saw through the commercial façade, and the custom of giving gifts on that day became progressively more accepted.[8] By 1937 the Father’s Day Council calculated that only one father in six had received a present on that day.[8] However, by the 1980s, the Council proclaimed that they had achieved their goal: the one-day event had become a three-week commercial event, a “second Christmas“.[8] Its executive director explained back in 1949 that, without the coordinated efforts of the Council and of the groups supporting it, the holiday would have disappeared.[8]

So friends, Ladies and gentleman, lapis and fountain pen- Happy Father’s Day to every Father out there.

For Dad like me, let us spend some precious time with our family. This is our day (off).

Sa mga Makikisig na Ama na may isang kinatatakutan “Happy Father’s day”

One of my family’s favorite dish is Bicol express. Every time I have the chance they would request me to cook it for them. This is one recipe that I had learned from my constant travel to Calabarzon the last 5 years due to my work.

The above photo was taken by my Ericson cellphone camera. Napaanghang lang!

Bicol Express Recipe

Estimated preparation time: 30 minutes

Estimated cooking time: 30 minutes

Bicol Express Ingredients:

1/4 kilo pork, thinly sliced

1 cup Baguio beans or string beans

3 cups long chili or siling labuyo

1 onion, minced

1 head of garlic, minced

1 cup coconut milk

1 cup coconut cream

2 tablespoons of cooking oil

1/2 cup Salted anchovies

Bicol Express Cooking Instructions:

In a cooking pan, heat cooking oil and brown sliced pork for a few minutes.

In another pan, sauté minced garlic and onion.

Add to the sauté the browned pork.

Then add the coconut milk and salted anchovies, bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add the chili peppers cook until dish gets a little dry.

Add the coconut cream and simmer until the sauce thickens.

add the string beans cover the pan and turn off the fire.

I turn off the fire after a few minutes of putting the string beans for it not be over cooked. Most Bicol dishes uses coconut milk and chili which was abundant in their area.
